The 1 Franc banknote issued by the Chamber of Commerce of Lons-le-Saunier in 1920, is part of Series 41. This banknote features Latin inscriptions on both sides.
On the obverse, the inscription CHAMBRE DE COMMERCE / DE / LONS-LE-SAUNIER is clearly visible, indicating the issuing institution. The face value, UN FRANC, is also highlighted. The signatures of the President and Treasurer of the Chamber of Commerce are found there. The serial number 011818 is printed, and the printer's mention, Imp. Générale Grenoble, appears at the bottom.
On the reverse, the banknote bears an inscription indicating the repayment deadline, set for December 31, 1925. This note specifies that the banknote had to be presented for repayment before this date. The printer, the Grands établissements de l'imprimerie générale de Grenoble, France, is also mentioned.
This banknote testifies to a time when Chambers of Commerce could issue their own local currency, in addition to the national currency. These issues were often linked to periods of economic crisis or shortage of liquidity. The Latin inscription and the official mentions present on the banknote reflect the administrative and legal context of its issue.
