This 1 Franc banknote issued by the Rochefort-sur-Mer Chamber of Commerce, dated February 25, 1920, belongs to the 5th series of this local issue. It is a type of paper money issued during periods of crisis or shortage of currency, often by local institutions such as chambers of commerce.
On the obverse, the note displays the mention "5ème SERIE" (5th SERIES) at the top. The name of the issuing institution, "CHAMBRE DE COMMERCE DE ROCHEFORT-SUR-MER" (ROCHEFORT-SUR-MER CHAMBER OF COMMERCE), is clearly indicated, followed by the reference to the deliberation of February 25, 1920. The face value, "1 FRANC", is highlighted. The signatures of the Treasurer and the President of the Chamber of Commerce also appear, authenticating the note. A serial number, "716.378", is printed. The mention "IMP KELLER FRERES ANGOULÊME" indicates the printer responsible for the production of the note.
The reverse of the note bears the mention "5ème SERIE" (5th SERIES). An inscription stipulates that the note must be presented for reimbursement before December 31, 1925, under penalty of prescription. The face value, "1 FRANC", is repeated. The printer, Imprimerie Keller frères of Angoulême, France, is also mentioned on the reverse.
This banknote testifies to a time when local institutions compensated for the lack of official currency by issuing their own banknotes. The redemption deadline on the reverse highlights the temporary nature of these issues.
