Description

The 1 Franc banknote issued by the Paris Chamber of Commerce, dated March 10, 1920, belongs to series A.70. This banknote features a distinct obverse and reverse design, created by Gustave Fraipont and printed by Imprimerie Chaix in Paris.

The obverse of the banknote displays ornamental floral motifs, framing two circular medallions. The medallion on the left depicts a winged caduceus, a symbol of commerce and negotiation. On the right, the medallion features the head of Mercury, the Roman god associated with commerce, travelers, and intermediaries. The inscriptions "CHAMBRE de COMMERCE de PARIS" and "UN FRANC" are clearly indicated, as well as the serial number "A.70" and the printing number "083.602". The signature "G. FRAIPONT IMP CHAIX PARIS" identifies the artist and the printer.

The reverse of the banknote offers a view of the Île de la Cité, an emblematic location in Paris and the historical birthplace of the city. A medallion surrounded by vegetation adorns the left side, displaying a ship, a traditional symbol of the city of Paris. The inscription specifies that the banknotes in circulation were exchangeable for Banque de France banknotes until July 1, 1922, in accordance with the deliberation of the Paris Chamber of Commerce dated March 10, 1920. The face value "1" is also mentioned.

This banknote does not have a watermark. Its format and the details of its printing testify to the monetary and economic practices of France in the early 20th century.
