Remarks:
This French banknote, with a nominal value of one franc, was issued in 1920 by the Chamber of Commerce of Châteauroux. The front of the banknote features inscriptions in Latin. The date of May 10, 1920, as well as a serial number, 10773, can be found on it. The mention "CHAMBRE DE COMMERCE DE CHATEAUROUX" is clearly indicated, followed by the value "UN FRANC". The titles "Le Trésorier" (The Treasurer) and "Le Président" (The President) are also mentioned, probably referring to the signatories of the banknote. Finally, the name of the printer, "IMP BADEL CHATEAUROUX", is visible.
The back of the banknote, also in Latin, bears the inscription "La contre-valeur est déposée au trésor" (The counter-value is deposited in the treasury). This mention indicates that the value of the banknote was guaranteed by funds held by the public Treasury. It also reads "Le remboursement aura lieu aux caisses publiques de l'Indre" (The reimbursement will take place at the public funds of Indre), specifying the place where the banknote could be exchanged for its value. A validity date is inscribed: "Ce billet est valable jusqu'au 10 mai 1925" (This banknote is valid until May 10, 1925).
The banknote incorporates a watermark representing bees, a security feature designed to prevent counterfeiting. The printer of this banknote was Imprimerie Badel, located in Châteauroux, France. This banknote testifies to a time when Chambers of Commerce could issue their own local currency, in addition to the national currency, to facilitate economic exchanges.
