This 1 Franc banknote, issued by the Calais Chamber of Commerce in 1916, is distinguished by its design and inscriptions. Dating from the First World War, this banknote reflects the economic and social context of the time.
The obverse of the banknote features a light green frame. The coat of arms of the city of Calais is positioned at the top, serving as a visual focal point. On each side, winged anthropomorphic figures, evoking columns, flank the central space. These figures feature busts of men whose arms are replaced by wings, surmounted by a flaming cup. A floral garland connects the two upper sides of the banknote, adding an additional decorative element.
The inscriptions include the mention "CHAMBRE DE COMMERCE DE CALAIS" at the top, followed by "DÉLIBÉRATION DU 14 JANVIER 1916". The face value, "UN FRANC", is clearly indicated. The signatures of the Treasurer and the President also appear on the obverse, authenticating the banknote. The mention "Série A" indicates the series of issue, while "LITH. ROY & VALADE. AMIENS." identifies the printer.
The reverse of the banknote is adorned with a blue ornamental frame. The main inscription specifies the terms of reimbursement: "Remboursement en billets de la Banque de France un an après la signature de la Paix." It also adds a clause stipulating that "Dans un délai de cinq ans après cette date, tous les billets encore en circulation devront être présentés au remboursement." The value "1" is repeated to reinforce the recognition of the face value. The watermark represents bees, a discreet motif integrated into the paper. The printer, Imprimerie Roy & Valade, Amiens, France, is also mentioned.
