Description

The 1 Franc note issued by the Chamber of Commerce of Boulogne-sur-Mer is a testament to French local monetary history. Dating from 1914, this note was designed to be refundable by the Chamber of Commerce, with an initial thirty-year statute of limitations set for January 1, 1925, according to a deliberation of June 4, 1920.

On the front, one can read the inscription "CHAMBRE DE COMMERCE DE BOULOGNE-SUR-MER" in capital letters, indicating the issuing institution. The face value, "UN FRANC", is also clearly visible. The mention of reimbursement by the Chamber of Commerce and the statute of limitations date are important elements of the legal and economic context of the issue. The signatures of the President and the Treasurer, as well as the unique serial number, "N° 448337", add to the authenticity of the note. The name of the printer, "IMPRIMERIES RÉUNIES BOULOGNE-S-MER", is also mentioned.

The back of the note is simpler, with the face value "1 FRANC" inscribed in capital letters. The writing used on both sides of the note is Latin, the administrative language of the time.

This note represents an example of local currency issued by a chamber of commerce in France at the beginning of the 20th century, a common practice to facilitate regional economic exchanges in times of crisis or shortage of national currency. It offers an overview of the financial and administrative mechanisms put in place to support local economic activity.
