This 1 franc banknote, issued by the Béziers Chamber of Commerce in 1921, represents a form of local currency issued in the particular economic context of the post-World War I period.
The front of the banknote displays the face value "UN FRANC" in capital letters. It also features the series "1G 42.28" and an identification number "14.579". The signatures of the treasurer and the president of the Chamber of Commerce authenticate the banknote. The words "CHAMBRE DE COMMERCE DE BEZIERS" identify the issuer. An inscription recalls the deliberation of the Chamber of Commerce on November 19, 1918, authorizing the issuance of these banknotes. Finally, it is specified that the banknote is "ÉCHANGEABLE A VUE CONTRE DES BILLETS DE LA BANQUE DE FRANCE", thus ensuring its convertibility into national currency.
The back of the banknote repeats the face value "UN FRANC". An important clause stipulates that "Ce billet devra être présenté au remboursement avant le premier janvier 1922 sauf décision prolongeant ce délai", indicating a limited validity period. The names "MAGROU INV." and "CADENAT FRÈRE" refer to the designer Jean Marie Joseph Magrou and the printer Cadenat Fr., respectively, both based in Béziers. The banknote does not feature a watermark.
All the inscriptions are written in Latin. This banknote testifies to a local initiative to alleviate the economic difficulties of the time, by facilitating trade within the Béziers region.
