This 50 centime banknote was issued by the Granville Chamber of Commerce on July 19, 1915. The date 1920 also appears on the banknote, likely indicating an expiration or validity date.
On the front, the words "CHAMBRE DE COMMERCE DE GRANVILLE" are written in capital letters, framing the years 1915 and 1920. Below, one can read "Délibération du 19 juillet 1915", referring to the decision that authorized the issuance of this banknote. The face value, "50 CENTIMES", is clearly indicated. A promise of exchangeability is also present: "Echangeable contre des billets de la Banque de France". The signatures of the Treasurer and the President of the Chamber of Commerce also appear on the front.
The printer's name, "J. Goachet Granville", is mentioned with a numerical reference "(2586-15)", possibly a serial number or printing reference.
On the back, an important instruction is printed: "Ce billet devra être présenté au remboursement à la Banque de France de Granville avant le 19 juillet 1920." This temporal indication emphasizes the need to exchange the banknote within a specified period. The printer's name, "Imprimerie J. Goachet, Granville, France", is also repeated on the back.
All inscriptions are written in Latin. The banknote testifies to a time when Chambers of Commerce could issue their own local currency, especially during times of crisis or shortage of cash.
