This 1 Franc banknote was issued in 1915 by the Chambers of Commerce of Rennes and Saint-Malo. It is a special issue intended to facilitate trade within the districts of these two cities.
The front of the banknote features an ornate frame containing 22 ermines. In the upper part, there are the coat of arms of La Gouesnière on the left, those of Rennes and Saint-Malo in the center, and those of Redon on the right. In the center, in the lower part, a Celtic cross surmounted by a crown is represented. An ornate frame, located below, contains the serial number of the banknote.
The main inscriptions on the front mention: "CHAMBRES de COMMERCE de RENNES & de St. MALO", "Emission du 25 Août 1915", "UN FRANC". The signatures of the President of the Chamber of Commerce of Rennes and the President of the Chamber of Commerce of St Malo are also present.
The back of the banknote consists of a double frame with a quarter of a wheel in each corner. The inscriptions on the back specify the conditions for exchanging the banknote: "La présente coupure ayant cours dans les circonscriptions des Chambres de Commerce de Rennes et de Saint-Malo sera échangeable à la succursale de la Banque de France de Rennes et à son bureau de Saint-Malo, mais la banque n'échangera pas pour une somme moindre de 20 francs." It is also indicated that "tout porteur de ces bons pourra en exiger le remboursement, même à vue, lorsqu'il en présentera pour une somme d'au moins 100 francs." The Chambers of Commerce of Rennes and Saint-Malo will determine the time of liquidation of the bonds, with a repayment period not less than five years from the date of issue.
