This 1 Franc banknote was issued in 1915 by the Chambers of Commerce of Rennes and Saint-Malo. It is a special issue intended to facilitate trade in the districts of these two cities.
The obverse of the banknote features an ornate frame containing 22 ermines. In the upper part, the coats of arms of La Gouesnière are on the left, those of Rennes and Saint-Malo in the center, and those of Redon on the right. In the center, in the lower part, a Celtic cross surmounted by a crown is depicted. An ornate frame, located below, contains the serial number of the banknote.
The main inscriptions on the obverse mention: "CHAMBRES de COMMERCE de RENNES & de St. MALO", "Emission du 25 Août 1915", "UN FRANC". There are also the signatures of the President of the Chamber of Commerce of Rennes and the President of the Chamber of Commerce of St Malo.
The reverse of the banknote consists of a double frame with a quarter wheel at each corner. The inscriptions on the back specify the conditions for exchanging the banknote: "The present coupon being valid in the districts of the Chambers of Commerce of Rennes and Saint-Malo will be exchangeable at the branch of the Banque de France in Rennes and its office in Saint-Malo, but the bank will not exchange for a sum less than 20 francs." It is also indicated that "any holder of these vouchers may demand reimbursement, even at sight, when they present them for a sum of at least 100 francs." The Chambers of Commerce of Rennes and Saint-Malo will determine the time for the liquidation of the vouchers, with a repayment period not less than five years from the date of issue.
