Description

Remarks:

Plis, salissures

The 1 franc coin issued in 1920 by the Bordeaux Chamber of Commerce belongs to the transitional period of necessity coins, which continued after the First World War. Despite the end of the conflict in 1918, the shortage of fractional currency remained significant due to economic imbalances and the lack of available metals. Chambers of Commerce continued their issues to support local trade.

Bordeaux, as a major port and economic center, played an essential role in this monetary organization. The Chamber of Commerce put these tokens into circulation to ensure the fluidity of transactions in a still-fragile economy.

The obverse presents a simple and legible composition with the inscription ?CHAMBRE DE COMMERCE DE BORDEAUX?, the value ?1 FRANC?, and the year 1920. The design is deliberately functional, with clear typography adapted for daily use.

The reverse adopts a sober style, sometimes embellished with discreet decorative patterns or geometric elements. As with all necessity coins, the artistic aspect remains secondary to the utilitarian objective.

From a technical point of view, these pieces are struck in aluminum or light alloys, due to post-war economic constraints. Their lightness and appearance clearly distinguish them from traditional official coins.

This coin circulated locally and temporarily, mainly in the Bordeaux region. It was gradually withdrawn during the 1920s when national monetary production normalized. It no longer has legal tender status today.

From a numismatic perspective, the 1 franc Bordeaux 1920 is an interesting and relatively accessible piece. It is sought after for its historical context, although it is less rare than some higher values. Specimens in good condition remain the most appreciated.

Finally, for the collector, this coin is a testament to the post-war period and persistent economic difficulties. It illustrates the prolonged role of local institutions in maintaining the monetary system, making these tokens both historical objects and representative of a pivotal era.
