The 1 franc coin issued in 1914 by the Bordeaux Chamber of Commerce belongs to the first emergency coins (monnaies de nécessité) put into circulation at the start of the First World War. The rapid disappearance of metallic coins, hoarded by the population or mobilized for the military effort, led to an immediate shortage of currency, forcing the authorities to authorize local issues.

In this context, Bordeaux, an important port and commercial hub, played a key role. The Chamber of Commerce issued these tokens to support the local economy and ensure the continuity of trade. These coins circulated as genuine means of payment, despite their unofficial status.

The obverse features a simple and legible composition with the inscription ?CHAMBRE DE COMMERCE DE BORDEAUX?, accompanied by the value ?1 FRANC? and the year 1914. The typography is clear, designed for practical and intensive use.

The reverse adopts a sober style, often adorned with discreet decorative patterns or geometric elements. As with most emergency coins, the artistic aspect is secondary, as the primary objective was functional.

Technically, these coins are struck in aluminum or light alloys due to the scarcity of traditional metals. Their lightness and appearance clearly distinguish them from classic coins.

This coin had a local and temporary circulation, mainly in the Bordeaux region. It was gradually withdrawn after the war when national monetary production resumed. It no longer has legal tender today.

From a numismatic point of view, the 1914 Bordeaux 1 franc is a sought-after piece for its early nature among emergency issues. It stands as a direct testimony to the first economic adaptations to the conflict. Its value depends on its state of preservation, with pieces in good condition being the most appreciated.

Finally, for the collector, this piece represents a key element of wartime numismatics. It illustrates the responsiveness of local structures to a major monetary crisis, making this token both a historical and iconic object.
