This 1 Franc banknote issued by the Angoulême Chamber of Commerce in 1920 represents a form of local fiat money, issued in the specific economic context of the post-World War I era. The banknote belongs to the 6th series of this issue.
The front of the banknote features the inscription "6ème série" (6th series) as well as the nominal value "1" in numbers. It also includes the inscription "CHAMBRE DE COMMERCE D'ANGOULEME" and "UN FRANC" (ONE FRANC). The text layout includes the mention "1" and "6me série" repeated in opposite corners. The printer's signature, "IMP. KELLER FRÈRE, ANGOULÊME", is also present.
The back of the banknote bears the inscription "6ème série" and the value "1". An important text specifies the terms of issue and redemption of the banknote: "DELIBERATION DU 14 JANVIER 1920" (RESOLUTION OF JANUARY 14, 1920). It is stipulated that the banknote is guaranteed by a deposit of equal value with the Public Treasury and that it can be exchanged in all public funds of the Angoulême Chamber of Commerce district. A redemption deadline is set for January 1, 1925, after which the banknote becomes invalid. The mention "1" and "6ème série" are repeated, similar to the front.
The banknote incorporates a watermark depicting bees, a security feature designed to prevent counterfeiting and authenticate the banknote. All these graphic and textual elements testify to the role of the Angoulême Chamber of Commerce in local monetary management and the guarantee mechanisms put in place to ensure confidence in this local currency.
