This 1 franc banknote was issued in 1915 by the Angoulême Chamber of Commerce. It is a type of emergency currency issued during the First World War to alleviate the shortage of coinage.
The obverse of the banknote features the inscription "CHAMBRE DE COMMERCE D'ANGOULÊME" in capital letters. The face value, "UN FRANC", is also clearly indicated. The inscription "4me série" is repeated twice, indicating the fourth series of issue of these banknotes. The number "1" is present twice, framing the central text. The name of the printer, "IMP. KELLER FRÈRE, ANGOULÊME", also appears on this side.
The reverse of the banknote bears the inscription "Ce Bon garantie par Dépôt d'égal somme à la Banque de France est toujours échangeable aux guichets de sa succursale d?Angoulême et devra sous peine de prescription y être présenté au remboursement dans le délai de cinq ans à dater de ce jour." This indicates that the banknote is guaranteed by a deposit equivalent to the Bank of France and exchangeable at its Angoulême branch, with a reimbursement deadline of five years. The value "1" is repeated twice on this side, on either side of the text. The inscription "4me série" is also repeated twice.
The banknote does not have a watermark. The inscriptions are printed in black on a light-colored background. The entire banknote reflects the characteristics of emergency currency issues of the time, with legal notices and information on the guarantee and exchangeability of the banknote.
