This 1 Franc banknote, issued by the Angoulême Chamber of Commerce in 1915, represents a form of emergency currency issued during times of economic crisis or shortage of coinage. The banknote belongs to the 4th series issued by this chamber of commerce.
The obverse of the banknote bears the inscription "CHAMBRE DE COMMERCE D'ANGOULEME" in capital letters, identifying the issuing institution. The face value, "UN FRANC", is clearly indicated, accompanied by the number "1" repeated on either side. The mention "4me série" also appears in the upper left and right, highlighting the series of issue. The printer's name, "IMP. KELLER FRÈRE, ANGOULÊME", appears at the bottom of the banknote, indicating the company responsible for its printing.
The reverse of the banknote bears an inscription specifying the conditions of guarantee and reimbursement. It stipulates that the banknote is guaranteed by a deposit of an equivalent sum at the Bank of France. It is exchangeable at the counters of the Angoulême branch of the Bank of France. An important clause mentions that the banknote must be presented for reimbursement within five years from the date of issue, otherwise it will be forfeited. The face value "1" is repeated on each side. The mention "4me série" is also present, echoing the obverse.
The banknote does not have a visible watermark. This absence of a watermark is a characteristic to be taken into account for the authentication of the banknote, although other security elements may be present. All of these elements contribute to the identification and history of this banknote issued in a particular economic context.
