This 1 Franc banknote was issued by the Abbeville Chamber of Commerce between 1914 and 1925. It is a type of emergency currency, issued during a period of shortage of cash during the First World War.
The front of the banknote features the words "Chambre de Commerce d'Abbeville" at the top. In the center, the face value "1 Franc" is written in large letters, accompanied by the words "Good for". At the bottom, there are the signatures of the President and the Secretary as well as the word "Abbeville". The serial number of the banknote is also present.
The back of the banknote repeats the face value "1 Franc" in the center, surrounded by graphic ornaments. The words "Chambre de Commerce d'Abbeville" are also repeated. Decorative motifs and guilloches complete the set, aiming to secure the banknote against counterfeiting.
This type of banknote was issued to facilitate local exchanges by making up for the lack of fractional currency. The period of issue of this banknote extends from 1914 to 1925, which testifies to the duration of the economic disruptions related to the war. This banknote is a testimony to the local economic history of Abbeville during this difficult period.
