This coin is a French centime dating from 1862, issued in Paris and struck in bronze. It belongs to the period of the French Second Empire, under the reign of Napoleon III.
The obverse of the coin features the portrait of Napoleon III, laureate and facing right. One end of the laurel wreath ribbon descends along his neck. The inscription "NAPOLEON III EMPEREUR" is written in capital letters around the portrait. The name of the engraver, Barre, is also indicated. The date of striking, 1862, is also on this side.
The reverse of the coin depicts the imperial eagle, symbol of the French Empire. The eagle is represented with its wings spread and its head turned to the right. It rests on a thunderbolt. The letter "A", designating the Paris mint, is visible under the eagle. The face value, "UN CENTIME", is inscribed in capital letters, framed by two stars.
The edge of the coin is smooth. The weight of the coin is one gram and its diameter is 15 millimeters. The mintage of this coin amounts to 15,363,042 copies. The general engraver and creator of this coin is Jacques-Jean Barre.
