Description

This coin is a French centime, struck in bronze, dating from 1857. It was produced at the Lille mint, identified by the letter "W". It weighs 1 gram and its diameter measures 15 millimeters. The mintage of this coin for the year 1857 in Lille amounted to 2,499,734 copies.

The obverse of the coin features the bareheaded profile of Napoleon III. A Latin inscription "NAPOLEON III EMPEREUR" is engraved around his portrait. The name of the engraver, Barre, is also mentioned. The year of minting, 1857, is indicated under the bust.

The reverse of the coin features the imperial eagle, symbol of the French Empire. There is also a Latin inscription "EMPIRE FRANÇAIS". The face value of the coin, "UN CENTIME", is also inscribed, framed by two stars.

The edge of the coin is smooth. The engraver of this coin is Jacques-Jean Barre.
