The 50 centime coin, commonly called ½ franc Semeuse, is a French coin issued in 1983. It is struck in nickel and weighs 4.5 grams. Its diameter is 19.5 millimeters.
The obverse of the coin features the Semeuse, an allegorical figure emblematic of the French Republic. This representation is signed O. Roty, in reference to Louis-Oscar Roty, the engraver who designed this motif. The legend "REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE" is inscribed in capital letters around the figure.
The reverse of the coin features an olive branch positioned below the face value "1/2 FRANC". The republican motto "LIBERTE ? EGALITE ? FRATERNITE" surrounds this ensemble. The engraver responsible for this design is also Louis-Oscar Roty.
The edge of the coin is reeded. The total mintage for the year 1983 amounts to 50,000,961 copies.
This coin is not associated with any specific issuing institution other than the French State, nor with a particular series. It represents a fraction of the nominal value of a French franc.
