The 50-cent coin, commonly known as the ½ franc Semeuse, is a French production dating from 1976. Struck in nickel, it weighs 4.5 grams and has a diameter of 19.5 millimeters. Its mintage reached 115,349,700 copies.
The obverse of the coin features the Sower (Semeuse), an emblematic allegorical figure of the French Republic. This representation is signed by O. Roty. The inscription "REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE" is written in Latin characters, framing the central motif.
The reverse of the coin features an olive branch placed under the face value of "1/2 FRANC". The republican motto "LIBERTE ? EGALITE ? FRATERNITE" is arranged around this motif. The engraver responsible for this design is also Louis-Oscar Roty.
The edge of the coin is reeded, a technical feature designed to prevent counterfeiting and to facilitate tactile identification for the visually impaired.
