The 50-cent coin, commonly known as the ½ franc Semeuse, is a French coin issued in 1971. It is struck in nickel and weighs 4.5 grams, with a diameter of 19.5 millimeters. Its mintage is 36,080,000 copies.
The obverse of the coin features the Semeuse (Sower), an allegorical figure emblematic of the French Republic. This representation is signed by O. Roty, referring to Louis-Oscar Roty, the engraver who designed this motif. The inscription "REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE" in Latin characters can be read around the figure of the Semeuse.
The reverse of the coin features an olive branch, a symbol of peace and prosperity. The face value of "1/2 FRANC" is inscribed above the branch. The national motto "LIBERTE ? EGALITE ? FRATERNITE" encircles the central motif. As with the obverse, the reverse is also engraved by Louis-Oscar Roty.
The edge of the coin is reeded, offering a distinct texture to the touch. The nickel used to manufacture this coin gives it a characteristic silver color.
