This silver akçe was struck during the reign of Murad II, Ottoman sultan, and belongs to the third type issued by this ruler, minted from the year 834 of the Hijra, corresponding to the period 1430?1445 CE. The coin was produced at the mint of Serres, a Macedonian city then under Ottoman control.
The reign of Murad II was marked by a significant consolidation of the Ottoman Empire in Europe and Anatolia. In 1430, he captured Thessalonica, then under Venetian control, durably strengthening the Ottoman presence in Macedonia. Facing Christian coalitions, he notably won the Battle of Varna in 1444, followed by the Second Battle of Kosovo in 1448, repelling the Hungarian and Albanian offensives led by John Hunyadi and his allies.
Serres, a Macedonian city integrated into the Ottoman sphere since the 14th century, was an important administrative and economic centre of the region, justifying the existence of an active mint during this reign.
