On 8 July 2013, Rio de Janeiro hosted the 28th World Youth Day. This time Christ the Redeemer was not only the most famous and beloved symbol of the Brazilian city, but also the symbol of a global meeting that brought together more than two million young people and "his open arms are the sign of the welcome that the Lord will reserve for all who come to Him'' (Benedict XVI 18 October 2012).
