This 10 cash coin was issued during the reign of Emperor Huizong of Song, the eighth ruler of the Northern Song Dynasty, during the Da Guan era (1107-1110).
Huizong is regarded as one of the most cultured emperors in Chinese history, an accomplished artist and calligrapher. His reign, however, witnessed the rise of the Jurchen people of the North, founders of the Jin Dynasty, who posed a growing threat to the Song empire. At the same time, relations with the Liao, then in decline, gradually deteriorated. On the domestic front, Huizong pursued a policy favouring the arts and culture at his court, while maintaining several administrative orientations inherited from Wang Anshi's reforms. This period of relative economic prosperity stimulated significant monetary production, as evidenced by the numerous series of coins issued under different reign eras. The Da Guan era thus marks an active phase in Song monetary policy, with copper issues of several denominations intended to support commercial exchanges within a densely populated and economically dynamic empire.
