Description

The 5 Chilean Pesos banknote, issued in 1947 by the Banco Central de Chile, is a testament to the country's history and identity. This banknote, with a value of five pesos, is a tangible representation of Chilean numismatic heritage.

The obverse of the banknote is mainly blue. It features a portrait of Bernardo O'Higgins on the right, an emblematic figure of Chile and Father of the Nation. The inscription "BANCO CENTRAL DE CHILE" appears at the top of the banknote, followed by the face value "CINCO PESOS" and its equivalent "MEDIO CONDOR". The statement "CONVERTIBLES EN ORO, CONFORME A LA LEY" indicates the convertibility of the banknote into gold, in accordance with the law in force at the time. The name of the engraver, "TALLERES DE ESPECIES VALORADAS - SANTIAGO - CHILE", is also present on the obverse. A particularity of this banknote is the presence or absence of a date above the value in the center.

The reverse of the banknote, also blue in color, features a small bank seal on the right. The watermark represents Diego Portales, another important figure in Chilean history. The dimensions of the banknote are 145 × 70 mm.

This 5 Pesos banknote offers an insight into the iconography and symbols used by the Banco Central de Chile in the mid-20th century. It testifies to the economic and political context of the time, as well as the importance given to historical figures in the construction of national identity.
