Description

The 5 Cruzeiros banknote, issued in 1964, belongs to the Cruzeiro series (Thesouro Nacional - 2nd impression) of Brazil. It measures 157 mm in length and 67 mm in width.

The front of the banknote, printed in sepia on polychrome by intaglio and offset, features a portrait of José Maria da Silva Paranhos, the Barão do Rio Branco. This portrait is positioned in the center of an ornate frame, with the number 5 placed on each side. The inscriptions include "REPÚBLICA DOS ESTADOS UNIDOS DO BRASIL", "TESOURO NACIONAL", the name of the Barão do Rio Branco, and the mentions "DIRETOR", "CAIXA DE AMORTIZAÇÃO", and "MINISTRO DA FAZENDA". The face value, "CINCO CRUZEIROS", is also indicated, as well as the mention "VALOR LEGAL". The printer, Thomas de la Rue & Company, Limited, London, is mentioned at the bottom.

The back of the banknote, printed in sepia by intaglio, depicts the Conquista do Amazonas, a painting by Antonio Parreiras. This image is located in the center of the banknote. The inscriptions include "REPÚBLICA DOS", "CONQUISTA DO AMAZONAS", and "ESTADOS UNIDOS DO BRASIL". The face value, 5, is repeated in several places. Thomas de la Rue & Company, Limited, London, is also mentioned on the back.
