Description
This 50,000 dinara banknote was issued in 1993 by Bosnia-Herzegovina, in a particularly significant historical context. The country was going through a period of deep economic and political instability caused by the armed conflict tearing apart the former Yugoslavia, generating severe hyperinflation that explains the issuance of banknotes with such high face values.
The obverse of the banknote features the portrait of Petar Ko?i?, an iconic figure of Bosnian Serb literature and nationalism. Born in 1877 and died in 1916, Ko?i? was a writer and political activist whose work reflected the resistance of the Bosnian people against Austro-Hungarian occupation. His representation on this banknote bears witness to the importance given to cultural and identity figures in the symbolic construction of Republika Srpska, the issuing entity of this currency during the war.
The reverse of the banknote displays the coat of arms, a central element of the official identity of the issuing entity, thus reinforcing the institutional and sovereign character of this means of payment. The overall graphic composition of the banknote conforms to the typical standards of monetary issues of this period in the former Yugoslavia, characterized by a relatively sober design given the wartime printing conditions.
The monetary unit used is the dinara, a local variant of the Yugoslav dinar adapted to the economic needs of the territory concerned. This type of banknote now represents a first-rate numismatic and historical testimony, illustrating the monetary and political upheavals experienced by the Balkans region in the early 1990s. Banknotes of this series are considered rare documents that help understand the monetary fragmentation that accompanied the break-up of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.
