The 500,000 Vietnamese dong banknote is a high-denomination note issued by the State Bank of Vietnam. Put into circulation in 2012, this banknote represents the highest face value in the current Vietnamese monetary system.
The obverse of the banknote features the portrait of Ho Chi Minh, the founding political figure of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. A revolutionary and statesman, he served as president of North Vietnam from 1945 until his death in 1969. His effigy, present on all Vietnamese banknotes, is rendered here with particular care, given the value of this note.
The banknote is made of polymer, a synthetic material adopted by Vietnam for its high-denomination notes since the 2000s. This substrate, originally developed by Note Printing Australia, offers superior durability compared to traditional cotton paper. It also incorporates advanced security features, including transparent windows, iridescent printing and holographic elements, characteristic of modern high-security banknotes.
The reverse of the banknote typically depicts a monument or iconic landscape from Vietnam's cultural heritage, in keeping with the graphic tradition of State Bank of Vietnam issues. The dominant colour palette of the banknote is blue-green, allowing for immediate visual distinction among other denominations in circulation.
