Description

The British Armed Forces Special Voucher (BAFSV) of 50 New Pence, belonging to the 6th series issued in 1972, is a garrison note used exclusively within the British armed forces stationed abroad. These special monetary vouchers constituted an internal parallel currency, designed to be used in British military canteens, shops and installations outside the national territory, thereby allowing control of monetary flows and preventing the circulation of local currencies or ordinary pound sterling in operational areas.

The 6th series of these vouchers represents one of the last issues of this type within the British decimal system, introduced in 1971, which explains the mention of "New Pence" on the note, terminology then in use to distinguish the new decimal monetary unit from the old system. This designation was gradually abandoned in favour of the simple term "Pence" in the following years.

These military notes are today fully-fledged collectible items, falling within both notaphily and British military history. Their distribution was strictly reserved for personnel of the United Kingdom armed forces, which gives them a particularly restricted and specialised character. Several successive series were issued throughout the 20th century, each featuring distinct graphic characteristics allowing their identification and differentiation.

The face value of 50 New Pence represented an intermediate denomination within the range of BAFSVs, which covered different nominal values to meet the everyday transaction needs of military personnel posted outside the United Kingdom.
