The 20 hryvnias banknote issued by Ukraine in 2025 is a remarkable edition in the current series of Ukrainian banknotes. It features the portrait of Ivan Franko, one of the most iconic figures in Ukrainian culture and literature. Born in 1856 and deceased in 1916, Ivan Franko was a writer, poet, journalist and political thinker whose extensive body of work profoundly shaped the cultural identity of Ukraine, particularly that of the Galicia region. His portrait appears on this denomination as a symbol of the intellectual and artistic heritage of the Ukrainian nation.
The reverse of the banknote depicts the Lviv Opera Theatre, officially known as the Ivan Franko National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre of Ukraine. This building, constructed in the late 19th century in a neo-baroque and neo-rococo style, is one of the most prestigious architectural monuments in Ukraine and across Central Europe. It is located in the heart of the city of Lviv, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The depiction of this building on the banknote establishes a strong link between the honoured figure and the cultural heritage of the western region of the country.
The issuance of this banknote in 2025 is part of the monetary policy of the National Bank of Ukraine, which oversees the design, production and circulation of the country's banknotes. The face value of 20 hryvnias represents an intermediate denomination within the range of Ukrainian banknotes currently in circulation.
