Description

This 50 baht banknote was issued by Thailand in 1996 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the reign of King Rama IX, also known as King Bhumibol Adulyadej. It belongs to Series C of the commemorative banknotes issued for this occasion, which distinguishes it from the other series produced as part of these national celebrations.

King Rama IX, sovereign of the Chakri dynasty, ascended to the throne in 1946 and became one of the longest-reigning monarchs in world history. His golden jubilee in 1996 was an event of paramount importance for Thailand, giving rise to numerous commemorative numismatic and fiduciary issues, of which this series of banknotes represents a notable example.

This banknote has a face value of 50 baht, the official currency unit of the Kingdom of Thailand. Its weight is 1 gram, a characteristic specific to this type of commemorative fiduciary medium. Banknotes of this nature, issued on the occasion of major dynastic or national events, are generally produced with particular care regarding their graphic design, incorporating strong symbolic elements linked to the Thai monarchy and the jubilee festivities.

As a commemorative banknote, this issue has a dual dimension: on the one hand, that of a legal tender at the time of its issue, and on the other hand, that of a historical and cultural document bearing witness to a key moment in the history of the Kingdom of Thailand. Series C of this issue is a particularly sought-after collector's item among numismatists and philatelists specialising in South-East Asian issues and commemorative documents of the Thai monarchy.
