Description
The 1 leu banknote issued in 2005 by Romania is part of the series introduced during the Romanian monetary reform of that same year, in which the leu was redenominated at a rate of 10,000 old lei to 1 new leu. This banknote thus represents the smallest denomination of the new Romanian monetary series.
The banknote features the portrait of Nicolae Iorga, a prominent Romanian historian, writer, politician and academician, considered one of the most important intellectual figures of 20th-century Romania. His presence on this banknote reflects the national recognition granted to his considerable work in the fields of Romanian history, literature and culture.
This banknote is distinguished by its polymer substrate, a notable feature of the 2005 Romanian series, which gives the banknote greater durability than traditional cotton or paper banknotes. This synthetic material also allows for the integration of advanced security features, such as a transparent window, making counterfeiting particularly difficult.
From an aesthetic standpoint, Romanian banknotes of this series are recognised for their refined design, combining motifs representative of Romanian cultural and historical identity with modern printing techniques. The 1 leu denomination fully embraces this approach, blending heritage tribute with contemporary monetary security requirements.
