The banknote is dedicated to Maria II of Portugal (1819-1853), a sovereign who reigned over Portugal on two separate occasions during the 19th century. The daughter of Peter IV of Portugal, she was nicknamed "the Good" or "the Educator" due to her commitment to public education during her reign.
