The banknote honours Maria II of Portugal (1819-1853), a sovereign known by the nickname « A Boa » (the Good) or « A Educadora » (the Educator). Daughter of Peter IV of Portugal, she reigned over the Kingdom of Portugal from 1826 to 1853, following a period of political turmoil marked by the Liberal Wars between absolutist and constitutional factions.
