Description
The 200 soles banknote issued by Peru on October 3, 2024 pays tribute to two distinct and iconic elements: the Peruvian painter Tilsa Tsuchiya and the Cock-of-the-rock, the country's national bird.
Tilsa Tsuchiya (1928-1984) is one of the major figures of 20th-century Peruvian painting. Of Japanese and Peruvian heritage, she developed a singular pictorial universe, blending Surrealist influences with Andean and Amazonian mythologies. Her works, populated by mystical creatures and hybrid figures, earned her international recognition and a prominent place in the history of Latin American art. Her presence on this banknote reflects the Banco Central de Reserva del Perú's commitment to celebrating the nation's cultural and artistic heritage.
The Andean Cock-of-the-rock (Rupicola peruvianus), also depicted on this banknote, is Peru's national bird. Recognizable by the male's vivid orange plumage and its distinctive frontal crest, it is endemic to the Andean cloud forests of South America. Its presence on the 200 soles banknote underscores the importance attached to the exceptional biodiversity of the Peruvian territory.
This banknote belongs to the current monetary series of the Peruvian sol, Peru's official currency since 1991, reintroduced after the period of the inti. The issue date of October 3, 2024 places this banknote within the country's contemporary numismatic production.
