Description

This 10 Nuevos Soles banknote was issued by Peru in 2009 and belongs to Series A. It is a representative piece of Peruvian monetary policy conducted under the authority of the Banco Central de Reserva del Perú, the institution responsible for issuing banknotes in circulation throughout the country.

The banknote features the signature of José Augusto Quiñones Gonzales, a historic Peruvian figure whose memory is honoured on this fiduciary medium. A national hero of the Peruvian military aviation, he fell in combat in 1941 during the armed conflict between Peru and Ecuador, and remains a powerful symbol of courage and sacrifice for the Peruvian nation.

The archaeological site of Machu Picchu also appears on this banknote, reflecting the patrimonial and cultural importance of this Inca monument to Peruvian national identity. Perched in the Andes at more than 2,400 metres above sea level, Machu Picchu has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983 and is one of the most iconic archaeological sites in South America. Its depiction on a banknote underscores the central role that pre-Columbian heritage plays in the culture and identity of contemporary Peru.

The nuevo sol has been the official monetary unit of Peru since its creation in 1991, replacing the inti. This 10 nuevos soles banknote clearly displays its face value and is part of a range of denominations intended for everyday transactions. Its weight is 1 gram, which corresponds to the manufacturing standards of modern banknotes, generally composed of a blend of cotton and synthetic fibres ensuring their durability in circulation.
