The 5000 guaranies banknote issued by Paraguay in 1990 is part of a series commemorating the great figures of Paraguayan national history. Although the full designation refers to Don Carlos Antonio Lopez, the banknote features the portrait of Bernardino Caballero, a central figure in Paraguay's political and military history.
Bernardino Caballero (1839-1912) was a Paraguayan general and statesman, founder of the Colorado Party in 1887 and President of the Republic of Paraguay from 1880 to 1886. He played a major role in the reconstruction of the country following the devastating War of the Triple Alliance (1864-1870), a conflict that had profoundly affected Paraguay both in human and economic terms.
This banknote was issued by the Banco Central del Paraguay, the institution responsible for the country's monetary policy and the issuance of banknotes. The guaraní, Paraguay's national monetary unit, takes its name from the Guaraní people, an indigenous population whose culture and language form a fundamental pillar of Paraguayan national identity.
From a conservation and collecting perspective, banknotes from this era hold particular interest for numismatists specialising in South American paper currency. The 1990 issues reflect the graphic and security characteristics typical of the period, with printing techniques and security features characteristic of late 20th-century banknotes.
