Description

This 1000 guaranies banknote was issued by Paraguay over a period spanning 1982 to 1995, belonging to series A. It represents a characteristic piece of Paraguayan monetary policy from the late 20th century.

The obverse of the banknote features the portrait of Marshal Francisco Solano Lopez, a major historical figure of Paraguay. Born in 1827 and died in 1870, he served as President of the Republic of Paraguay from 1862 until his death. He is particularly known for leading his country during the War of the Triple Alliance (1864-1870), a conflict that pitted him simultaneously against Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay. Considered a national hero in Paraguay, he is often seen as a symbol of resistance and national sovereignty, which justifies his presence on this high-denomination banknote.

The reverse of the banknote depicts the National Sanctuary of Paraguay, a building of great symbolic and heritage value for the country. This type of architectural or landscape representation on banknotes is common in Latin American numismatic tradition, illustrating the attachment of states to their cultural and historical heritage.

The denomination of 1000 guaranies represented a significant note in the Paraguayan monetary system at the time of its issue. The guaraní, Paraguay's national currency, was introduced in 1944, replacing the Paraguayan peso. This denomination reflects the economic evolution of the country during the last decades of the 20th century.

From a conservation and collecting perspective, this banknote is of particular interest due to its long period of issue, spanning more than a decade, which may result in subtle variations between the different specimens produced over the years within this same series.
