Description
The 20 naira banknote issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria in 2021 belongs to the GY series and is made of polymer, a modern synthetic material used by many central banks around the world for its durability and resistance properties that are superior to those of traditional paper.
This banknote pays tribute to General Murtala Ramat Muhammed, a prominent figure in Nigeria's political and military history. Born in 1938 and assassinated during a coup d'état in February 1976, he served as Nigeria's head of state from July 1975 until his death. His portrait features prominently on this banknote, reflecting the national recognition he holds within Nigeria's collective memory. Lagos International Airport also bears his name in his honour.
The naira has been Nigeria's official currency since 1973, when it replaced the Nigerian pound. The 20 naira denomination is one of the intermediate values in the range of banknotes currently in circulation in the country.
The adoption of a polymer substrate for this banknote meets specific technical criteria. This type of substrate offers greater resistance to wear, moisture and tearing, significantly extending the lifespan of the banknote in circulation. It also allows for the integration of specific security features, such as transparent windows, enhancing protection against counterfeiting.
The GY series precisely identifies the issue batch, enabling rigorous traceability within Nigeria's monetary production for the year 2021.
