100e anniversaire de la Banque du Mexique
The 100 Mexican pesos banknote, issued on 27 June 2024, is a release from the Bank of Mexico featuring one of the most important intellectual figures in Hispanic-American history.
This banknote pays tribute to Juana Inés de Asbaje, known as Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, a Mexican nun, poetess and philosopher of the 17th century. Born around 1648 and died in 1695, she is considered one of the earliest figures of feminism in Latin America and one of the great representatives of Baroque literature in the Spanish language. Having entered the Order of Saint Jerome, she devoted a large part of her life to poetic, dramatic and theological writing, championing women's access to knowledge at a time when this was particularly controversial.
The banknote belongs to the 100 pesos denomination, the official monetary unit of Mexico. Its year of issue is 2024, making it a contemporary and recent release within the series of banknotes currently in circulation in Mexico. The precise date printed on the banknote, 27 June 2024, corresponds to the official date of authorisation or issue by the Mexican issuing authority.
The presence of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz on this denomination is not new in Mexican monetary iconography, as this figure has already appeared on previous issues, reflecting the enduring recognition of her cultural and intellectual legacy within Mexican national identity.
