Description

The 500 patacas banknote is issued by the Monetary Authority of Macao (AMCM), a special administrative region of the People's Republic of China. This denomination belongs to series AB, with an official issue date set on 18 May 2020, with circulation planned for 2026.

The pataca (MOP) has been the official currency of Macao since 1894, subdivided into 100 avos. It coexists with the Hong Kong dollar, which is widely accepted throughout the territory. The 500 patacas banknote is one of the highest denominations in the Macanese monetary system, reflecting the needs of a dynamic economy, particularly linked to the gaming and tourism sectors.

Macanese banknotes are traditionally issued by two distinct institutions: the Banco Nacional Ultramarino (BNU) and the Bank of China, each producing their own graphic series while maintaining an identical face value. The designs on these banknotes are generally inspired by the architectural and cultural heritage of Macao, a territory listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, featuring representations of historic monuments, iconic bridges or scenes evoking local identity, blending Portuguese and Chinese influences.

Modern Macao banknotes incorporate advanced security features, characteristic of contemporary international standards, such as security threads, watermarks, colour-shifting inks and raised printing perceptible to the touch. These devices ensure the authenticity of the banknote and help combat counterfeiting.
