Banque de Chine
The 1000 patacas banknote issued by Macao on 18 May 2020 represents the highest denomination of the Macanese currency. The pataca is the official currency of the Macao Special Administrative Region, attached to the People's Republic of China since 1999.
This banknote highlights two highly representative iconographic elements of Macao's culture and history. The junk, a traditional sailing vessel characteristic of the seas of Southeast Asia and southern China, recalls the historical importance of maritime trade in the development of Macao as a Portuguese trading post, and later as a major economic hub in the region. The dancing lion, in turn, is an emblematic figure of Chinese festive traditions, present during Lunar New Year celebrations and other important cultural events. This ritual dance, performed in ornate costumes representing a lion, symbolises prosperity, good luck and the warding off of evil spirits.
The combination of these two motifs on a single banknote illustrates the cultural duality unique to Macao, a territory shaped both by its Lusophone heritage and its deep Chinese identity. This coexistence of traditions is one of the most distinctive historical and cultural features of this territory.
The issue date printed on the banknote is 18 May 2020, making it a relatively recent issue, integrated into the contemporary series of Macanese banknotes. The face value of 1000 patacas makes it a high-denomination note, used primarily for significant transactions or kept for numismatic collection purposes.
