Description
The 50 Jamaican dollar banknote, issued on 1 June 2022, is an official legal tender banknote of Jamaica. This note honours two iconic figures of Jamaican history: George William Gordon and Paul Bogle, both recognised as national heroes of Jamaica.
Paul Bogle, a Baptist deacon and central figure of the Morant Bay Uprising of 1865, is one of the personalities depicted on this banknote. He led a rebellion against the conditions of oppression and social injustice that weighed upon the Jamaican population following emancipation. His struggle resulted in his execution by the British colonial authorities, before he was recognised, decades later, as a national hero.
George William Gordon, a politician and civil rights activist, was a close associate of Paul Bogle. A landowner and member of the Jamaican Legislative Assembly, he championed the rights of the poor and the oppressed, which also cost him his life during the suppression of the Morant Bay Uprising. He shares with Bogle the status of Jamaican national hero, and their association on this banknote illustrates their shared struggle for justice and equality.
This banknote with a face value of 50 dollars is part of Jamaica's official monetary series and reflects the commemorative policy of the Bank of Jamaica, which uses its banknote issues to honour the great figures of its national history. The year of issue 2022 places this banknote within the contemporary issues of Jamaican currency. It weighs 1 gram, consistent with the usual standards of modern banknotes in terms of lightness and practicality.
