Description
This 100 Jamaican dollar banknote was issued on 1 June 2022 by Jamaica. It is part of the series of banknotes in circulation in this Caribbean country and represents a key piece of Jamaican monetary and cultural policy.
One of the central figures depicted on this banknote is Marcus Garvey, a Jamaican personality of international stature. Born in Jamaica in 1887, Marcus Garvey is recognised as one of the major leaders of the Pan-Africanist movement and is closely associated with the ideological origins of the Rastafari movement. His philosophy, centred on the pride and emancipation of African peoples and their diaspora, earned him worldwide recognition. He is considered a Jamaican national hero, and his presence on this banknote reflects the importance attributed to him by the history and culture of the country.
The banknote also features Dunn's River Falls, one of Jamaica's most iconic natural sites, located near Ocho Rios in the parish of Saint Ann. These falls, whose waters cascade over terraced rock formations to a height of approximately 55 metres, represent a significant element of Jamaica's natural heritage and constitute a recognised geographical symbol of the island.
This note is a banknote in the strictest sense of the term, that is, a fiduciary instrument issued within the official framework of Jamaican monetary policy.
