Description

This 2,000,000 Iranian rial banknote was issued in 2025 by the Islamic Republic of Iran. It is a high-denomination note reflecting the contemporary Iranian monetary context, marked by structural inflation that has required the issuance of banknotes with very high face values over the decades.

The central theme of this banknote is dedicated to polo players, a sport whose origins date back to ancient Persia. Polo, known in Persian as « ????? » (chowgan), is considered one of the oldest equestrian sports in the world, with its practice attested in Iran for more than two millennia. Its depiction on an Iranian banknote constitutes a tribute to this cultural and sporting heritage deeply rooted in Persian identity, recognised by UNESCO as an element of intangible cultural heritage.

This banknote belongs to the category of modern banknotes issued by the Central Bank of the Islamic Republic of Iran (Bank Markazi Jomhouri Islami Iran). The face value of 2,000,000 rials corresponds to 200,000 tomans, the toman being the informal but widely used unit of account in everyday transactions in Iran, equivalent to ten rials.

The banknote features graphic elements related to the equestrian and sporting theme, depicting riders in full playing action, in the tradition of Persian iconography that has long celebrated the relationship between man and horse. Iranian banknotes of this generation generally incorporate modern security features as well as inscriptions in the Persian language including the face value and the official references of the issuing institution.
