Description
This 10,000,000 rial banknote was issued by Iran in 2025. It is part of Iranian monetary policy which, in the face of persistent inflation, has led the Central Bank of the Islamic Republic of Iran to issue banknotes with increasingly high face values over the years.
The banknote features two iconic architectural elements: a mosque and a fortress, two types of monuments that occupy a central place in Iran's historical and cultural heritage. Mosques represent the spiritual and religious dimension of Persian and Islamic civilisation, while fortresses bear witness to the military and defensive history of the territory. This combination on a single banknote illustrates the desire to celebrate both the civil and religious architectural heritage of the country.
It should be noted that Iran has also introduced the toman as the official unit of account, equivalent to 10 rials, making this banknote the equivalent of 1,000,000 tomans. This denomination reflects the contemporary economic reality of Iran and the considerable evolution of the purchasing power of its national currency. This banknote thus serves as a direct testimony to the recent monetary history of the Islamic Republic of Iran, through a high-denomination note marking a milestone in the evolution of the country's fiduciary system.
