Description
The 2 Lempiras banknote is an official issue of the Central Bank of Honduras, dated June 20, 2019. It is a denomination belonging to the Honduran national monetary series, denominated in lempiras, the country's official monetary unit since 1931.
The lempira takes its name from the Honduran indigenous chief Lempira, a national hero who resisted the Spanish conquest in the 16th century. This denomination reflects Honduras's attachment to its pre-Columbian heritage and historical memory.
The banknote honours Marco Aurelio Soto, a major political figure in Honduran history. Born in 1846 and died in 1908, Marco Aurelio Soto served as President of the Republic of Honduras from 1876 to 1883. His tenure was marked by significant liberal reforms, particularly in the fields of education, public administration and the modernisation of the Honduran state. He is considered one of the architects of the modern Honduran state, having profoundly restructured national institutions under the influence of the liberal ideals of his time.
The issue date printed on the banknote, June 20, 2019, corresponds to the official date of circulation or authorisation of issue by the Central Bank, a common practice for banknotes that allows the precise identification of the series to which the note belongs and distinguishes it from earlier or later issues bearing the same face value.
