Description

The 1 cedi banknote issued by the Bank of Ghana belongs to the series identified by the prefix EY, put into circulation on 6 March 2010. This issue is part of Ghana's monetary policy, as a West African country and member of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

The Ghanaian cedi was reintroduced in its current form in July 2007, as part of a monetary reform aimed at replacing the original cedi at a rate of 1 new cedi for 10,000 old cedis. This 1 cedi banknote thus represents the basic unit of this reformed currency.

The banknote belongs to the EY series, a designation corresponding to the serial numbering specific to this type of issue, enabling the identification and traceability of each banknote within monetary circulation. The issue date of 6 March 2010 coincides with Ghana's national holiday, the anniversary of its independence proclaimed in 1957, which gives this banknote a particularly symbolic dimension in the country's history.

Like all banknotes in this series issued by the Bank of Ghana, it incorporates graphic and security features specific to the standards of the Ghanaian central bank, with visual representations evoking the history and national heritage of Ghana, notably the Big Six, iconic figures of Ghanaian independence, who traditionally adorn the obverse of banknotes of this generation.
