Description

Plis et froissé

The 10 Deutsche Mark banknote issued in 1980 by the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) is one of the most iconic notes in the series issued by the Deutsche Bundesbank. This banknote features the portrait of the famous German Renaissance painter and engraver, Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528), a major figure in the history of Western art whose work profoundly influenced European art of his time.

On the obverse of the banknote, the portrait of Albrecht Dürer takes centre stage. It is a reproduction inspired by his celebrated self-portraits, reflecting the care taken in depicting this cultural figure of national and international stature. The face value of 10 Deutsche Mark is clearly indicated, along with the official inscriptions characteristic of Bundesbank issues.

On the reverse, there is a representation of the gate of the Nuremberg Citadel, Albrecht Dürer's birthplace, thus emphasising the connection between the artist and his native region. This iconic medieval architecture reinforces the heritage and cultural significance of this banknote.

This banknote belongs to the fourth series of German banknotes, gradually introduced from the 1960s onwards and remaining in circulation until the introduction of the euro in 2002. The graphic design of this series is distinguished by its tribute to great figures of German culture and science, each associated with a monument or element representative of their legacy.

It is produced on high-quality banknote paper, incorporating the security features characteristic of Bundesdruckerei printing techniques, including watermarks, security threads and special inks designed to prevent counterfeiting.
