This 20 piastres banknote was issued in 1949 by the Banque de l'Indochine for circulation in French Indochina, a colonial territory then encompassing Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. This is a specimen example, a particular category of banknote produced for reference purposes and distribution to banking institutions and competent authorities, in order to allow the identification of authentic banknotes in circulation.
Specimen banknotes are distinguished from ordinary banknotes by the presence of specific overprints or perforations indicating their special status, making their legal circulation impossible. They are generally produced in very limited quantities, which gives them significant documentary and collectible interest. This example belongs to series O.000, a numbering characteristic of specimens, whose zero digits confirm the absence of assignment to a regular circulation series.
The year 1949 corresponds to a historically significant period for French Indochina, marked by the political and military tensions related to the First Indochina War which began in 1946. The Banque de l'Indochine, a private institution founded in 1875 and holding the privilege of monetary issuance over this territory, nonetheless continued to fulfil its monetary functions until the progressive dissolution of its issuing role in the following years, as the various states of the territory gained their independence.
The Indochinese piastre had been the official monetary unit of French Indochina since 1885, subdivided into cents. The 20 piastres banknote represented a significant denomination within the monetary system in use at that time.
